why i think the past & future are irrelevant
so often i have found myself lying awake at all hours of the night, unable to drift to sleep because of the unwelcoming reminders of the horrid day i've had. "i can't believe i did that. why could i not have worded that differently? i wish i would have just did that paper. if i had done this instead of that.."
or, i find myself pondering about the future. "what am i going to be doing? what job will i have? who will be in my life? where will i be living? will something astonishing happen to me? will i still be alive?"
or, i find myself pondering about the future. "what am i going to be doing? what job will i have? who will be in my life? where will i be living? will something astonishing happen to me? will i still be alive?"
these thoughts frequently invade my mind, taking over and causing unnecessary stress. it has only just occurred to me though how absolutely useless it is to let these thoughts pertaining to the past and the future takeover... and here is why:
the past - "gone by; over; having existed yet no longer existing." no longer existing... why do i stress over things no longer existing? no matter what, i cannot change or alter the past in any way. what has happened has happened and moving on is the greatest decision i could make for myself. i can learn from the past, but should never dwell on it.
the future - "indefinite time yet to come; undetermined events; at a later time." at a later time... why stress about something that has yet to happen? i have yet to experience this indefinite time i'm stressing over. in all reality, i'm stressing about something that has not happened and may or may not happen. don't stress about the unknown, what is meant to happen will ultimately happen.
the present - "the period of time now occurring; the moment you are living in right now." this should be the concern. this is the time you're wasting when stressing about no longer existing experiences and times yet to come. this moment we call the present is the moment that will soon be part of the past and was once considered the future. when we consume ourselves with pasts and futures we separate ourselves from the now. this, the now, is the moment we should consume ourselves with. take in the now, every single bit of it. because before you know it, your present will be you at 55 years of age, your past this very moment you could be missing. let the present, the now, hold your attention.
